Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox is a purified neurotoxin that temporarily reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. These are the signs of aging caused by expression – whether that’s smiling, frowning, or squinting.

The injectable neurotoxin slows activity in the muscles that cause these expressions, so wrinkles fade and you appear more youthful.

Botox has been approved for cosmetic use in more than 90 countries and has more than 500 peer-reviewed studies that support its effectiveness and safety.

What areas can Botox treat?

Botox is effective in softening lines and wrinkles in areas commonly affected by expression. These include:

  • Horizontal frown lines
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Elevens (11s) or frown lines between the eyebrows

You can have just one area treated or multiple areas, depending on your cosmetic goals.

You can elect to have just one area treated, or have all areas injected for a uniform effect.

How long will the effects of Botox last?

The effects of Botox are temporary and last 3-4 months, depending on how your body reacts. Dr. Clott can put on you a schedule for retreatments so you maintain your look for the long term.

When will I see the effects of Botox?

You’ll start to notice the effects of Botox injections within 24-48 hours, but optimal results are obvious in about seven days. If you have any questions about your treatment or experience any side effects, contact Somerset Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery immediately.

What happens during Botox treatment?

Your entire treatment session lasts 15-20 minutes. Any makeup on your face is removed and Dr. Clott identifies the relevant muscles for injection.

As he administers the Botox, you’ll feel a slight pinch of the needle.  Most people find the procedure tolerable, but if you’re concerned about discomfort, a topical numbing cream and ice are available to soothe your senses.

Do Botox treatments require downtime?

You don’t have to schedule downtime following your Botox appointment. Go right back to work, school, exercise, and daily chores. Usually, no one will notice you’ve had anything done. If you do have slight bruising or redness at the site of the injections, you can cover them easily with makeup.
